G-Star Raw links with Stephen Jones for hat collection

G-Star Raw is to launch a first-of-its-kind collaboration and one that’s quite surprising, with the denim streetwear brand working with high-end headwear designer Stephen Jones.

The fruits of this link-up are described as “the first Haute Couture denim hat collection” from the milliner, who’s better known for working with luxe labels like Dior, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Vivienne Westwood and Thom Browne, among many others.

Known for his celebrity creations as well, he and the denim label have now combined Jones’s “legendary British flair and craftsmanship with the denim expertise of G-Star Raw”.

They’ve come up with a unisex capsule collection of five couture hat pieces and two ready-to-wear limited editions, including a bucket hat and baseball cap that will be available via G-Star.com from 1 December.

Each piece shows the craftmanship from both collaborators, “all created in a responsible Cradle to Cradle Gold Certified denim fabric”. 

The supersized couture hats take inspiration from Jones’s earlier creations, while the two RTW items are inspired by classic streetwear styles — the bucket hat and baseball hat.

Jones said: “Everybody around the world knows what denim is and what denim signifies. I took denim out of its comfort zone and made it what it wasn’t. G-Star gave me complete carte blanche.”

The launch also comes with a short documentary filmed in the Stephen Jones atelier in London’s Covent Garden. It offers “a rare insight into his atelier, creative process and ground-breaking designs, but also gives a glimpse of his rebellious past and status within the high fashion world”.
