On August 29, on the occasion of French President Emmanuel Macron’s official visit to Denmark, the Institut français de la mode (IFM, the French Fashion Institute) and the Global Fashion Agenda, organiser of the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening their collaboration to promote sustainable development in fashion.

The agreement’s signing, with Bruno Le Maire, Eva Kruse, Dominique Jacomet and Pascal Morand - FHCM

The two institutions established closer links under the auspices of French Economy and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire, his Danish counterpart Anders Samuelsen, the head of the Global Fashion Agenda, Eva Kruse, the IFM’s general manager Dominique Jacomet and the executive president of the French federation for haute couture and fashion (FHCM), Pascal Morand.

The signatories stated that future joint projects will include engaging key fashion industry stakeholders, notably senior corporate executives and creative directors, through round-table discussions and the issuing of joint press releases on the challenges of sustainable development, detailing the progress made in the field, the actions taken and the policies adopted.

Global Fashion Agenda (GFA) is an umbrella brand created around the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, the event which has emerged as the main gathering of ethical and sustainable fashion labels. GFA notably set itself the mission of publishing studies and reports on sustainability issues, as well as lobbying with Danish, European and international institutions to promote a more sustainable fashion industry.

“The French fashion industry is one of the most powerful and influential in the world, and this is why we are already collaborating closely with a sustainable development pioneer like French luxury giant Kering,” said the GFA’s Eva Kruse. “The signing of this memorandum of understanding is essential to promote more far-reaching changes within French fashion companies, and to launch concrete initiatives to encourage industry leaders to shift towards new business models which will guarantee a secure future to individuals, corporations and the planet,” added Kruse.

The memorandum’s aim is therefore also to broaden the consensus among French labels engaged in social responsibility and environmental issues. “Working with the Global Fashion Agenda affords a fine opportunity to promote sustainability within the fashion industry, and to raise the awareness of its directors, designers and researchers for these issues,” said Dominique Jacomet.

“Promoting sustainable development by tackling environmental issues, advocating the engagement in corporate social responsibility and combining innovation with know-how in the long term are some of the major challenges supported by FHCM. This is why the collaboration between GFA and the IFM, boosting the latter’s expertise in this field, marks a major new step towards fashion’s sustainability on a global scale,” said Pascal Morand.
