American Apparel has been officially pulled into the American presidential campaign race, following an announcement from Fortune magazine that the brand's t-shirts will be used as merchandise in support of Donald Trump's conservative party.

A bizarre situation for the Los Angeles-based apparel brand who, since 2009 and its mismanagement conviction for employing workers with papers, has had to lay off 1,800 employees.

An event which has seen American Apparel hire more expensive and less experienced staff.

Nevertheless, since 2009, the brand has defended the rights of migrants, values that oppose the anti-immigration policy talk of Donald Trump.

American Apparel even parodied the conservative party's slogan this year - 'Make American Great Again' - with their very own 'Make America Gay Again' stamped across a line of t-shirts.

Via a spokesperson, the American brand expressed its inability to control the sale of its t-shirts.

"Because we believe in free trade, we sell our American-made t-shirts to thousands of screen printers across the country, allowing them to sell to any customers they choose,” the retailer told Fortune in a statement.

“Since we cannot control our wholesalers’ business practices, we want to emphasise that our core values do not always align with the messages printed on the end consumer’s product.”
