Kunsthal Rotterdam to stage Viktor&Rolf exhibition

Rotterdam-based exhibition center Kunsthal announced today that it will host an exhibition on Dutch couturier duo Viktor&Rolf. The exhibition, titled ‘Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists 25 years,’ will be in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Dutch fashion house.

The retrospective show will feature more than 45 pieces from Viktor&Rolf’s haute couture collections, stage costumes for ballet and opera as well as earlier designs from both the fashion house’s archives and museum collections.

The focus of the exhibition is on the details of the duo’s work that has set them apart in the fashion industry over the last twenty-five years, as well as the duo’s conception of wearable art. In addition, there will be special pieces on view, such as the costumes Viktor&Rolf designed for Madonna for her charity auction during Art Basel Miami, 2016.

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren, designers at Viktor&Rolf, jointly stated in a press release: “After the success of our retrospective exhibition in Melbourne, we are proud that it will now be traveling to the Kunsthal Rotterdam. Apart from showing our work on the catwalk, we also enjoy presenting it as an exhibition. In this way everyone can see it, not just that handful of people attending the shows in Paris.”

Thierry-Maxime Loriot, curator of the exhibition, said: “With exquisite craftsmanship and dreamy silhouettes, sometimes made from tinkling bells or red carpet, the fashion artists Viktor&Rolf – a real Dutch national treasure – have been creating wearable art for the past twenty-five years in the most unique and singular style.”

Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists 25 Years’ is based on the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne exhibition, developed in collaboration with Viktor&Rolf and guest curator Thierry-Maxime Loriot.

Kunsthal Rotterdam first opened its doors in 1992. The museum hosts around 25 exhibitions a year, its focus ranges from contemporary art to forgotten cultures, photography, fashion and design. Recent fashion exhibition included ‘Peter Lindbergh: a different vision on fashion photography’ and ‘Cabin Crew: Fashion in the Air.’ 

Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists 25 Years’ will run 27 May 2018 – 30 September 2018.
